The Tree Spirits | Touch

The Tree Spirits | Touch

The Tree Spirits| Touch sound work reflects on the life of a tree, speculating on its acoustic component, and explores the interaction of an individual part of a plant with the colony of organisms and the forest biotic community. The sound recordings give voice to the existence of a tree in its annual and life cycles which begin and end in silence. The silence anticipating the springtime resurgence of sap flow, and the silence of destruction caused by climate change, drought, and fires.

Installation at +MSUM, Ljubljana, 19. May until 11. September 2022

The artist zeros in on the touch; touch as an expression of genuine concern and awareness of the coexistence with plants, and a destructive touch of environmental devastation. The sounds of touching a tree trunk, branches rubbing against each other, the crushing of loose bark, the foliage, the rustling of trees in the wind, water drenching the roots – an acoustic journey through the physical existence of a tree. All the way to branch breaking, tree falling and a fire, a warning of the upcoming drought which is always a hard blow to a forest habitat.

The composition with the recorded and processed tree sounds, produced both within the organism as well as when touched by a human or the environment, builds an emotional and dramatic narrative charged with the natural and amplified sounds comingling and entwining. A dynamic 8-channel installation pulls the listener in the very centre of a sound happening.

The installation demonstrates, investigates, and records the changes in the electrical conductivity, which are the result of the intensive drying process of the individual tree cookies (sliced portions of a tree trunk), converting the parameters – through heat, electrical and oscillation sensors, and converters – in the visual and acoustic forms. The cookies dry up and crack. They are colonised by microbes, mould, and fungi, and in the process of decomposition change their forms. Symbolically, these newly formed tree structures confront us with the shortage of water and moisture.

The pulsation of two different rhythmical structures is
filling the silence in a sustained, steady, monotonous and
persistent manner, rebounding from the concrete ground
and walls of nearby buildings.
The task these structures perform is very simple. They
signal to the pedestrians and cyclists that they have two
options: “Stop – wait” and “Move on”.
There are no pedestrians, no cyclists – there were none
before as well.

CESSE Conference

CESSE Conference

CESSE FUNDING CONFERENCE – Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology (29th November – 1st December  2018)

Organized by Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest (MOME)

Magazine – Central European Society for Soundscape Ecology (mome.hu)

CONA with Irena Pivka and Brane Zorman joined funding CESSE conference in Budapest. It was a great achievement and organizational challenge led by CSABA HAJNÓCZY, chief organizer from Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest and many others.

The conference came to light and was build few years after first ideas and intentions about forming South East Europe society about soundscape ecology were laid down and expressed by Miloš Vojtechovsky, Brane Zorman and Eric Leonardson in Prague, CZ in 2015 at TO CO ZNÍ ZA ROHEM / LISTENING AROUND THE CORNER, With Presentations, lectures and discussion at: tranzitdisplay. organized by Miloš Vojtechovsky.

CESSE was renamed to CENSE in 2018 – Central European Network for Sonic Ecologies (CENSE) is an informal network of individual voices, coming from various backgrounds. We propose this emerging network to fill a need, that of fostering more perceptive and conscious ideas and solutions, addressing developments in the social and cultural fields of (Central) Europe related not only to sound, ecomusicology, and sound art, but mainly to deep environmental and social changes.

CENSE was established in the framework of the The Founding Conference of CESSE / CENSE, the Central European Network for Sonic Ecologies in Budapest, 29 November to 1 December, 2018, CESSE organized and initiated by Csaba Hajnóczy.

Moon Pong – Ping.Ping a project by Brane Zorman and Hakan Lidbo

Moon Pong – Ping.Ping a project by Brane Zorman and Hakan Lidbo

I am glad to announce a new project that is in the development since July 2016 with Hakan Lidbo partnering with programmer Per-Olov Jernberg and me powered with programmers Slavko Glamočanin and Gregor Žigon, with Silvo Obrul an active member of Slovenj Gradec radio amateur club as a EME consultant and operator on the ground.

We will post news and updates here but first few words about the Moon Pong – Ping.Ping project:

Moon Pong – Ping.Ping is planned to become the largest interactive game that was ever created, with the largest natural outreach delivered and accepted trails (ie. the transmitted, received and recorded radio signal) based on EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) communications. Initiated by artists Brane Zorman and Hakan Lidbo Moon Pong – Ping.Ping is set to cross international and space borders by-passing physical limits and creating an enormously vast playground field where EME radio amateur community plays a crucial role in projects realization.

The Field:

Moon Pong – Ping.Ping play field is measured a whooping 384.000 (Earth-Moon distance) x 6,371km (radius of the planet Earth), not counting in that gets “lost” or bounced to outer space, as for the moment we believe there is no one that would join our game from there.

This project aims to bridge and cross fields of art, science and radio amateurism creating interesting and fruitful experience for everyone involved. While creating this project we were led by desire to play, explore, discover, connect and merge art methodologies with communities dealing with electromagnetic radiation and space exploration.

The Game:

By using special radio protocols and frequencies used in their daily operations, EME radio amateurs, amateur clubs and organizations around the world use targeted and computer controlled radio antennas (with diameter of 8m or more) and operate them with a laser sharp precision to send / receive Morse code identification messages to the Moon.

Player ie. server sends out Moon Pong Ball Morse radio signal pointed straight to the Moon. From the lunar surface it bounces in various directions – some heading back to the Earth while most of it gets lost in the space. Bounced signal collides with atmosphere, clouds, winds and other factors when weakened returns to Earth’s surface dispersed across a vast area (eg. Europe , Africa, Asia, the Middle East, America,..).

Spread around the globe EME radio amateurs are waiting and listening to the Moon Pong Ball bounce as it arrives around 2,5 seconds later. When they recognize and identify its sender they trigger their controllers. Players actions get through the process of verification and seconds later winner is announced and score gets updated. The last winner becomes a new server and the game continues for another 60 minutes.

The winner of the game becomes first Moon Pong – Ping.Ping champion. He or she holds the title till the next game is announced and played.

Stay tuned for further announcements here.
